The finishing result of your sign is what gives it the sleekest and beautiful look. Without a finishing touch, your sign would look as well as feel rough and incomplete. However, it’s not all about visually pleasing, having a good and appropriate finishing keeps your signs well protected from small damages such as scratches to big one caused by natural elements from outside exposure. Powder-coated finish is one of the most commonly used and preferred methods. Keep reading to learn more about it.
What Is Powder Coated Finishing?
Powder-coated finishing consists of a mixture of resin, pigments, and fillers and is applied with the help of an electrostatic spray gun. Powder coating does not contain any solvents and is known to produce a thicker layer of the coating compared to certain liquid-like ones. There are certain types of metal to which powder-coated finish is applied and suitable, some of which are, aluminium, steel alloys, mild steel, and stainless steel.
Benefits of Having a Powder Coated Finish
There are several benefits of using powder-coated finishing to your metal signs. Here are some of the advantages:
· Solid Protection
As mentioned above, having a good coating keeps your signs well protected. A powder coated finishing acts as a barrier against several things such as rust and corrosion. It also protects your signs from being scratched, scuffed or even chipped.
· Non-toxic
This specific coating is known to be non-toxic, inert, and less flammable due to the properties it contains, making it much safer and environmentally friendly to use due to the lack of chemicals exerted in the air.
· Efficient
Most often, this process consists of almost no waste due to the presence of electromagnetic energy used in the gun. Professionals have a better hand at handling such as coating it in one go rather than layers in order to make the procedure more efficient.
· Variety of Options
One of the greatest benefits of using this method of finishing is being able to customize the coating as per your liking due to the variety of coloured powders present that creates perfect blends and textures.
A few other advantages include durability, low cost and maintenance, and quality.
How Does Powder Coated Finishing Work?
Initially, there are two other processes the sign goes through, sandblast and prime. The reason for sandblasting is to ensure all dirt particles are removed from the surface in order to ensure the powder coat sticks properly.
The epoxy primer is then applied in order to create a bond between the layers and protect it from outdoor exposure. After these two steps are when the powder-coated finishing is applied. With the help of the electric charge present in the gun, the dry powder is fused to the surface of the metal.
Followed by that step is the curing process in which the sign is baked at 400 degrees Celsius in order to receive a smoother result. Once the sign is cooled down, it is then packed and shipped.
